December through March is high season in Puerto Vallarta. Temperatures will be manageable (though still high), whale-watching season will be in full swing and the beach will buzz with families seeking winter sun. If you're not keen on crowds and don't mind missing the whales, consider visiting in shoulder season, between April and June. Puerto Vallarta has a good range of transportation, so there's no need to rent a car here unless you want to. The bus network has a frequent service with great coverage, and ticket prices are low. Bike paths are plentiful too, so why not explore on two wheels?
