Best time to Visit

December through March is high season in Puerto Vallarta. Temperatures will be manageable (though still high), whale-watching season will be in full swing and the beach will buzz with families seeking winter sun. If you're not keen on crowds and don't mind missing the whales, consider visiting in shoulder season, between April and June. You'll have more space on the beach and will dodge the scorching temperatures of the height of summer.

What to Pack

Things get cool out on the water, especially in the evening, so pack some sweaters and light layers for boat trips. And make sure you can check all these items off your list too:

  • Binoculars: Very handy if you're spotting whales or other wildlife.
  • Sunscreen: Coat yourself in the stuff all year round, and make it high factor and biodegradable. The sun is strong here and it pays to be protected in every season.
  • Sandals: Don't risk that horrible sand-in-shoes feeling. Liberate your feet with lightweight, open-toed sandals. Or go extra laid-back with flip-flops.
Getting Around

Puerto Vallarta has a good range of transportation, so there's no need to rent a car here unless you want to. The bus network has a frequent service with great coverage, and ticket prices are low. For something more novel, try a water taxi. And of course there are traditional taxis, which publish their rates on the cars so you can be sure you won't get charged too much. Bike paths are plentiful too, so why not explore on two wheels?
