What you can expect

See a unique side of Mexico's heritage with a visit to the native communities of Chamula and Zinacantán. From a small local church to a family-run cooperative, you get a look at the way traditions and modern life have shaped the world to be found in the country.

Your guide leads you out of San Cristobal to visit the town of Chamula, still populated by the Tzotzil people. Learn about their unique identity and living traditions that trace back to the ancient Maya. In the nearby town of Zinacantán, visit the local church before you relax with a regional drink at a local family home.

For a look at how the region's pre-Columbian heritage still informs the local livelihood, you can watch craftswomen use the Mayan-style waist loom to produce finely detailed woven crafts. You're then invited into the kitchen, where you might try some handmade tortillas ahead of your return to San Cristobal.
