To someone who’s never been, Israel might seem like another Middle Eastern nation, one embroiled in all the war, strife and tension that has come to define this region in our popular mindset. While parts of the Jewish state can unfortunately embody these qualities from time to time, Tel Aviv, a sprawling coastal city whose world-class food scene, nightlife and beaches have earned it a reputation as the “Middle East’s Capital of Cool,” seems a million miles away from all that. As an added bonus, a few days in Tel Aviv puts the best of the rest of Israel only a short drive away—the entire country is only about as big as New Jersey. If you haven’t thought to add Israel to your bucket list yet, we’re pretty sure the following photos will land it there soon.

After dropping your belongings at one of the award-winning boutique hotels such as Rothschild 71 or The Rothschild along trendy Rothschild Boulevard, head due west for the coast. Tel Aviv is modern and forward thinking, but ancient Caesarea is only 45 minutes up the coast. Marvel at the mosaic floor of the Promontory Palace, which dates back to Roman times, and delight in the breeze blowing in off the Mediterranean.
