Monterey Wine Country

Taste your way from country to coast, and savor the flavors of California's best offerings in Monterey Wine Country.

Only 100 miles north of San Francisco, Monterey Wine Country sprawls from sea to mountains, with independent wineries making some of the best California wines in between. With 80 vintners to discover and wineries offering tastings daily, a road trip is definitely in order, just be sure to hire a driver, and leave room in your bags for the bottles you'll want to take home.

Monterey Wine Country is mostly known for its pinot noir and syrah, but with 53 varieties grown in the region, there's a wine for every taste. Wine growing has been a way of life here since the 18th century, when Franciscan friars in nearby missions introduced the plants. Homage is paid to that heritage through the deep respect that wine growers and locals alike have for the quality of their products. A glass of Monterey wine pairs perfectly with the delicious food and verdant hillsides of this region.

Getting Around

Relying on a rental car to get around Monterey is your best option. You wouldn't want to miss out on any scenic coastal drives, would you? There are also public buses available via the Monterey-Salinas Transit District that offer routes throughout the region.

Best time to Visit

Beat the crowds and catch food and wine festivals just as Monterey is warming up between March and May. August through October are warmest at around 69°F. If this is still a bit cool for you, prepare to get cooler-if you visit in September, you'll be chilling out to the smooth sounds of the annual Monterey Jazz Festival, which has been in action since 1958.

What to Pack

Nature puts on a great show in Monterey-butterflies, wildflowers, seals, deer, beachside walks-so bring some walking shoes and a driver's license so you can fit it all in. Also remember to bring:

  • An argyle sweater: Mingle with golf pros at one of the country's most stunning oceanside courses.
  • Deck shoes: You'll fit right in at Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, or on a whale-watching tour.
  • Universal translator: Star Trek fans will remember the Monterey Bay Aquarium from The Voyage Home.
