Waikiki Hotel Guide

Waikiki is located on the southern shore of Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii. Once a home for Hawaiian royalty, Waikiki is renowned for its beaches and is the location of many of Honolulu's hotels and resorts. Even cheap hotels in Waikiki are near the beach, which makes it a popular vacation spot. Flights to Honolulu get you as close to Waikiki as possible, and then it's only a 9-mile drive from the airport to Waikiki Beach.

Out and About in Waikiki

Waikiki is a beach and water lover's paradise, and Waikiki hotel deals sometimes include lessons for surfing and other water sports. Tear yourself away from the sun and surf to visit the Honolulu Zoo, which houses about 1,000 different animals. Spend some time learning about local sea life at the Waikiki Aquarium, home to green sea turtles, Hawaiian monk seals, and a giant clam display. Pay homage to "the father of modern surfing" on Kuhio Beach, where a bronze statue of Duke Kahanamoku honors the Olympic swimmer and native Hawaiian son. Hotels in Waikiki aren't be far from the Waikiki Beach Walk, an 8-acre entertainment district featuring boutiques, restaurants, and an outdoor plaza for live performances such as hula dancing, Hawaiian quilt making, and local music.

Eating and Drinking

There are restaurants located throughout Waikiki, in the resorts and hotels as well as scattered throughout the Beach Walk. A couple of Beach Walk restaurants feature Hawaiian fare like fresh seafood, poke, and macademia-crusted fish, while the rest are mainly typical American fare such as subs, sandwiches, steaks, and burgers. Seek out other native dishes such as paulau (pork wrapped in taro leaf), Pipikaula (jerky), kalua pig, and poi (made from the taro plant) in restaurants throughout Waikiki. Beach Walk also features some nightlife in the way of bars, but you'll need to head to downtown Honolulu if you're looking for a wide variety of live music venues and dancing.
