A decent location on the west coast of Oahu
We stayed here for 9 nights. It is rural in an Oahu-sense, but urban enough to be close to stores within 2-15 minutes drive. The beaches over there are much less busy, but just as sandy and sunny as anywhere else on the island. Around Waianae and Makaha, there is a more local, genuine feel, less touristy, which made Robin and Aki's location nice to come home to after a day of driving around Oahu.
We had a small propane barbeque to use and the one-burner induction cooker and electric panini grill was sufficient for making most of our evening meals. Plenty of hot water in the shower, and the washing machine worked as washing machines do (no dryer). Very little noise from upstairs where Robin and Aki live, and very respectful of our privacy as we hope we were of theirs. The AC unit helped keep the temps down at night and create white-noise to counteract some of the country-noises you encounter in rural settings. As described, their pets are friendly and well behaved. They have gear to borrow for body boarding and surfing, but you may want to pick up a rental vehicle with a roof rack or buy an inexpensive $50 nylon strap rack from any of the Oahu Wal-Marts to carry up to 2 boards. (take the rack home with you if you want).
It is about an hour drive from Honolulu when you avoid the traffic and, say an hour and a quarter to Waimea Bay. Plan your day to avoid the traffic and you get to stay at an affordable location, close to the beaches, close to Kaena Point, and you get to see the sun set on the ocean every day.
Good luck to Robin and Aki in your future endeavours!
