Montana Luz Hacienda Views, Air Condition, Enclosed yard, Hot tub and Sauna

Arroyo Seco - Des Montes Area - with big sky mountain views! Half way between Taos and Ski Valley - 7 miles to town and 9 miles to Ski Valley

Montana Luz Hacienda “Mountain Light"

A signature Southwest residence, located in a ranching community seven miles from the Town of Taos and approximately nine miles from Taos Ski Valley. The hacienda is within walking distance to Arroyo Seco on a rural road which passes an old Penitente Morada, cemetery and the back of Julia Roberts’ 50-acre ranch.
This cozy historic country home was built in the early ‘60s by sisters Sandra and Laurel Seth, Southwest adobe builders who developed a unique building architecture style and design. They are authors of the book called “ADOBE!” - also known locally for their use of natural resources, hand-made adobes, brick, flagstone and timbered local wood.
The original 950 square foot structure was built on part of the Antonio Martinez Land Grant. Over the years, different owners have added their touches and more rooms to create what is currently a 3,000 square foot living space. Recently remodeled, the structure features a 400 square foot inner flag stone court yard, portals (covered patio's) for extended outdoor living with access from the kitchen, living room and northeast bedroom and an additional 2,000 square foot flagstone patio and connecting walkways surrounding the entire home.
Additionally there is an open ramada with hot tub, sauna, fire pit, several private patios and ample parking. The home is on approximately one acre of land, surrounded by an adobe and latilla (coyote fence) with an electric gate for secured privacy.
Large viga ceilings are prominent throughout the hacienda, as are Spanish corbels and lintels. To the immediate left of the front door is an open kitchen with talavera tile counters and custom shelving. An eating area is nestled in a corner with bench seating for eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped with new appliances: refrigerator / freezer with ice maker, electric stove featuring a ceramic surface and overhead microwave, dishwasher, disposal, double sink. Additional appliances include a coffee maker, blender, 4-slot toaster, crock-pot, griddle, hand mixer and flat ware for 16 people. You will find all the necessary kitchen tools to complete any gourmet meal - right down to the wine and brandy glasses.
In the dining room opposite the kitchen, a traditional kiva fireplace captures one’s eye. The center of this room also serves as additional table seating for four people. Of particular fascination is the raised window alcove banco (built in bed or bench) with latilla ceiling. The banco offers extended sleeping for 2 guests on a full size mattress.
An extensive entertainment center features a 42” satellite television with a DVD, Sony AM/FM/CD/Blue Tooth stereo system. A second satellite television is located in Bedroom 3. The four bedrooms are separated, two on each side of the living-dining- kitchen area, providing privacy and ease of movement throughout the house
At night, guests enjoy starry skies, glistening snow off the Sangre de Christo Mountain Range and the glowing valley lights of Arroyo Seco while relaxing in the 8 person 14 jet hot tub. The outdoor sauna is an additional amenity found in only a few Taos vacation rentals.
Montana Luz is ideal for families and groups desiring to be together under one very southwest roof for a true Taos experience!

Donaldson Family Gathering
We overall enjoyed the property. It was conveniently located between Ski Valley and Taos. The views of the mountains from the outdoor space was phenomenal whether morning coffee pre-sunrise or early evenings for dinner. Inside the place was efficient but we wish there had been a particular room where we could have more easily congregated. The kitchen was well equipped for our stay as we cooked most of our meals and had everything furnished that we needed! My favorite thing was the daybed…for napping or reading books or just lounging. We spent a great deal of time outside from coffee to dining to hot tubbing and it was a great layout. Our only two complaints were we really needed another shower as the one bathroom off the kitchen only had a tub so we shared our master shower each day with 3 other family members. We sure didn’t mind sharing but it caused delays each day waiting on everyone to shower. The only other complaint was there is a brick ledge right in front of the sink just as you approach the counter / sink so several of us wearing sandals or barefoot had a screaming moment or two with our toes…a simple padded mat in front of the sink would eliminate the problem. We really give the place a 4.5 not a 4, but were unable to give 1/2 point increments in the survey. As far as a VRBO review litmus test let’s just say we would definitely go back and I think that means more than any of the ranking categories.

Taos Area Family Trip
The home was great for our 3 generation family. Some of the wooden outdoor furniture needs to be replaced as it is broken and way splintered. Also many spiders and other bugs inside. Time to spray? Great neighborhood. Wonderful views.

Escape to Arroyo Secco/Taos
Nothing compares to the beauty of the New Mexico mountains and wide open spaces! Seven of us used Montana Luz as our stay for a week as we explored the cuisine, culture and landscape of the area. The house embodies the best of architecture from the region. Unfortunately, after a 12 hour commute to our residence it was frustrating that the information shared by the rental agent didn't match the actual code for the gate which gave us access to the property. However, the rental agent was quick to respond and once parked and inside Terra was attentive to our needs --- to include a late night stop by the property to help us get the fire place lit as we settled in.

Great time for ski group
Our ski group had a blast! We loved the hot tub and house! No complaints. Only a few minor bits of info for future renters… the one bed advertised as a queen is a full, so it is tight for two adults. Also note that the toilette and shower in the master bedroom does not have any privacy wall, so my wife and I had some good jokes about that. Such cool, unique architecture in this house! We loved it and absolutely would be back in a heartbeat.

Great way to finish up winter of 2022
Big fans of Montana Luz. This property is as unique as it appears in the listing – loads of character, very comfortable, and stunning scenery. We had a large group and everyone enjoyed the unique feel of the place, we all had our own space and could come together for meals and socializing. We did not encounter some of the previously listed issues from other guests, everything worked and functioned as expected. Definitely will be back next winter.

October stay
During the month we stayed at Montana Luz we came to really like the place... but... being an old well-used house it is in need of a thorough deep clean, some attention to details and updating. Over all it is a charming but quirky place, comfortable but somewhat complicated to maintain.

Montana Luz Hacienda even better than advertised! Property was simply exceptional for our family ski trip! Clean, well appointed, first class place all the way around. We made gourmet dinners for 8 each evening - and the kitchen and supplies made it easy! Cozy living spaces with easy to use Kiva fireplaces in literally every room were terrific in 0 degree weather! Beds all comfy and great hot water pressure in the baths for multiple showers at the same time. Washer & dryer came in very handy to wash wet/dirty ski clothes - and place had plenty of towels for our large group. Hot tub and sauna were awesome to soothe sore muscles after a long day on the slopes. Glen the property caretaker was friendly, helpful and quickly responsive when we needed him at check in regarding WiFi code (only simple issue we had in 4 days!). Cannot recommend this lovely Hacienda any higher - as it will be “our place” every year we return to ski Taos! Thanks for making our family reunion ski trip a success!

We loved this funky adobe house!
This is an old adobe house in a quintessential (funky) Taos neighborhood with beautiful views and just 10 mis to the ski basin. The house was all warmed up and cozy when we got there and there was plenty of space for our group of 6. We loved the hot tub and sauna - great after skiing. Glen the caretaker was responsive and very helpful. The only knock on this place are the two showers. They are tiny and are the cheap plastic ones you get from Home Depot. The one in the master is so tiny I could barely raise my arms to rinse the shampoo out of my hair! :-) Other than that we are definitely going to get this house again!

Loved it, despite a few shortcomings!
Others have mentioned the lack of screens on the windows. We weren't worried. Mistake! There were swarms of mosquitos everywhere outside. On the day we stayed in, we baked! There is no central a/c and we couldn't open the windows to cool off. If there had been some citronella torches provided or, at least, some insect repellant on hand, we would have been much happier. As it was, we really couldn't use the patios, hot tub, or firepit. We literally had to sprint from our cars to the house (and we still got dozens of itchy bites). There was a mouse in bedroom #2, but no traps had been laid. The bathroom next to bedroom #2 had a toilet that ran and bathtub knobs that fell off. The instructions from the property management company led us astray in a couple of areas. 1) The wifi modem has a different name and password than provided. 2) The car gate was a major hassle. The provided key code didn't work. We had to go in through the walking gate and use the remote. There is only a single remote and the gate doesn't open automatically when you're leaving. With five cars, one remote and only two gate keys (on top of no cell reception (Verizon and Sprint/T-Mobil) to call someone to let you in, getting in and out was always a pain in the a**. On a minor note, the property had been cleaned before we arrived, but the trash wasn't hauled away! Both garbage cans were full, so for the first two days we had garbage bags pililng up inside. The house is beautiful, and so are the grounds. It's just a shame we couldn't enjoy them to the fullest.

We all enjoyed our stay to memorialize our family life so much! So many areas to be together or alone. We enjoyed the outdoor areas, especially the fire pit and hot tub, as much as the interior. We were each able to find just the right bedroom for our personalities. The kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and utensils. We particularly loved the place settings.
