About this property

Historic 1900s Ship Smith Cottage... A Patriotic New England Inspiration!

Your journey into Mystic's maritime history begins here!

Transport yourself to Mystic's shipbuilding heyday at Smith Cottage. This adorable, open-concept, pet-friendly, two-bedroom retreat in historic Old Mystic captures the essence of a bygone era.

Nestled at the head of the Mystic River, it offers a perfect base for exploring the coastline and Mystic Seaport. With Colonial nautical charm and 21st-century comfort, the Smith Cottage invites you to experience genuine New England hospitality.

A HISTORICAL STAY

Built by the relatives of one of the original families who settled on the east side of Mystic River, the 1807 Williams Home property oozes with history and character! Located in the original colonial settlement of Mystic or Head O' the River, the Smith Cottage at the 1807 Williams Home property is a short ride- two miles to sightseeing and Mystic eateries.

The history buff in you will love the story behind the Smith Cottage and the 1807 Williams Home. The Smith Cottage started out as a blacksmith's shop in the early 1900s and was named in its honor.

The main house was originally known as the Wayside Inn~ a regular stopping point for stagecoaches on their New London-Providence runs. On January 17, 1840, former Secretary of State Daniel Webster, traveling by sleigh, stopped in for a drink on his way to the Groton Ferry to catch a boat to New York! If only walls had ears, imagine the stories they could recount! Perhaps if you slow down, you can hear the walls whisper words of the past!

HIGHLIGHTS

* Perfect setup for a small family group or two couples
* Two bedrooms (sleeps 4) on the first and attic-style second floor

Mystic offers a variety of activities, from visiting the museums, local beaches, restaurants, and shops to a day out in nature with a picnic basket~ there is something for everyone!

Mystic is a place to visit anytime, as you can attend events throughout the year!

Whether you need relaxation or activity, Mystic offers both!

Several last-of-its-kind treasures call Mystic their home.

The Mystic Seaport Museum is a must-see while you are here! The 1807 Williams Home rooms are named after maritime trades. The museum is home to five National Historic Landmark vessels: Charles W. Morgan- last whaling ship, Sabino Coal Steamer- last in regular operation in the U.S., L.A. Dunton, Joseph Conrad, and the Emma C. Berry. Our property next door to the 1807 Williams Home & Smith Cottage, the 1784 Denison Home, offers 5 guest rooms, all named in honor of these five vessels at the Mystic Seaport. The Carriage House, our newest offering behind the Denison Home in Old Mystic, has rooms themed after historic people of the time.

Also, Mystic is home to Clyde's Cider Mill, the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the U.S. This special mill draws crowds in the fall to see the steam engine in action.

Storybook stay
Enchanting week staying at the Smith Cottage with my partner and canine old boy. Immaculate is an understatement for the cottage-it was beautiful, cozy and it is mind-boggling to me just how attentive, intuitive and thoughtful our host Debbie is. I cannot wait to return next September. Everything both inside and outside this property was great, including the beautiful fire pit under the harvest moon at night. Thank you Debbie, for a much needed wonderful stay.

Charming Stay in Mystic
The cottage was absolutely adorable, filled with nautical antiques and cozy fabrics and furniture. The kitchen was appointed with everything we could need, including plenty of coffee. The owner is attentive and thorough. We were able to easily access Mystic attractions and nearby hiking areas. The cottage was very clean and welcoming, with lights on and music when we arrived. Note that there are two sleeping areas, but they are not walled-in bedrooms, so light and sound travels between the sleeping areas. Our kids loved sharing the loft space and there were books and toys for them to use. We absolutely loved this cottage and our stay in Mystic, highly recommended.

The most perfect, cozy spot ever!
A friend and I stayed overnight to celebrate a milestone birthday. Even before we arrived I could tell we were going to fall in love with the place! Debbie is beyond fantastic! She communicates promptly, is there to answer any question, and is just an absolute pleasure. Ok, now to when we arrived. From the moment we pulled up I was certain we couldn’t have picked a more perfect place. I really have no words to accurately describe how well thought out it is. Details upon details, special little touches, imagination and thought used throughout! My friend and I were blown away! The house is not only aesthetically fantastic but everything is super clean and comfy as well. We did not want to leave, like ever! Debbie has an incredible gift and has found her calling as a host. We will be back 100%! Thank you so very much Debbie. We are your biggest fans! Counting the days until we can return!

Warmth and charm abound
This was just a remarkable experience. The center of all is the caring of the proprietor whose goal is to create a magical stay for the guests. Greeted by an incredible apple pie and delightful personalized notes on small blackboards throughout the cottage, there is a sense of visiting family. Debbie is ready to help in anyway possible and we got great joy in sharing pictures of our family outings. The cottage itself is beyond well equipped: from coffee, honey and spices to picnic baskets and beach towels to name a few. I was especially taken for all the activists for children. Even though we were traveling with teenage girls, they were tickled by the toys and games. They also loved sleeping up in a loft, away from pesky grandparents where they could chat at great length!! We enjoyed exploring all the historical memorabilia that had obviously been so loving ly collected. In our 60 years on the road, I cannot recall any place with such a combination of warm hospitality and charm. Thank you.

The cottage looked great online and it exceeded my expectations! I was delighted by the Americana decor, and everything we could possibly need was provided. Naturally the apple pie was a wonderful treat as well! Head and shoulders above a motel but also better than every other rental I've ever stayed in. I'd give it six stars if I could (or maybe 48 stars like a vintage flag.

I had the most lovely, relaxing, comfortable stay here with my elderly dog on a workcation and I already know I will return here often. The hosts are exceptional at hospitality! Without being intrusive, they check in and see if you need anything by message, and the house manual and instructions provided are thorough and helpful. I was so impressed with the cleanliness and how beautiful the property is along with the exceptional comfort and all the amenities there. The Perfect Host
I was trying to book a hotel in Mystic for the Columbus Day weekend. There were no vacancies in the preferred hotels. So I started looking for a house to rent. I found this cottage and was relieved they had an opening. The pictures were very unique as it was decorated in a very patriotic setting with lots of flags and a unique New England charm. When we walked in, we very touched to see that Debbie, the host, had left us a hand written card welcoming us. She also wrote us personal messages on her little blackboards. If that wasn’t enough, she had left us a homemade apple pie on the kitchen table. The house itself was adorable, spotless and very comfortable. The bedding and towels were top quality and there were even things in the bathroom like razors, Qtips, cotton balls, toothpaste and toothbrushes. There was also a washer and dryer which is always a plus. Debbie was also very easy to get in touch with and she wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. The house was conveniently located near the aquarium and Olde Mystic Village which was great. If I could give this property more than five stars I would and I rate it A++! Thank you for everything!
