My recent check-in experience at a resort in Cancun was a series of disappointments and upsetting interactions, particularly with the front desk staff. I arrived with another group of friends, and we had requested to be placed in rooms close to each other. However, they placed our group in separate locations—our friends on the 3rd floor and us on the 2nd floor. To make matters worse, the room originally assigned to us had a strong, unbearable odor of paint that caused us physical discomfort, including headaches. We had to practically beg the staff to move us to a different room, which they begrudgingly did, placing us next door to our friends after initially claiming that no accommodations could be made. Unfortunately, the rudeness and lack of hospitality from the staff set the tone for the remainder of our stay.
Once we settled into the new room, there were still basic necessities missing, like washcloths. When we requested them, we were told to come to the front desk instead of having them delivered to the room. It rained heavily during our stay, and the hallways began to reek of sewer, adding to the unpleasant environment. The worst part, however, was the blatant disrespect and what felt like discriminatory behavior from the staff throughout our stay. As Black women, we often felt ignored or treated with less priority compared to other guests.
